The research program on «Higher education and research systems» of the Center for the Sociology of Organizations (CSO), a research unit affiliated to Sciences Po and the CNRS, launches a call for candidatures for a three-year doctoral contract funded by Sciences Po from 01.10.2011.

The fellowship is offered within the program “Higher education and research systems” at the CSO, led by Christine Musselin (CNRS research professor) and Jérôme Aust (Sciences Po assistant research professor). You can read more about the core themes here.

Application deadline 1st of May.

Requirements: Applicants for doctoral contract are expected to be trained in organizational or economic sociology, but also to possess solid knowledge in management and public policy analysis. They must also be familiar with various methods and techniques: qualitative approaches (interviews, observations, analysis of documents and archives, ethnographic methods) as well as quantitative approaches (statistical methods, network analysis, textual analysis, or longitudinal analysis). Previous experience in team work is also very much welcome. Applicants must be fluent in English and have solid notions of French.

Expectations: As a member of the CSO, the doctoral candidate will be provided with a desk, a computer and an internet connection. He/she is expected to work at the CSO and to participate in its weekly doctoral seminar. Christine Musselin will supervise this PhD with Jérôme Aust.

Applicants should submit:

  • A detailed CV in English.
  • A PhD project linked to one of the perspectives developed by program on “Higher education and research systems” of the CSO.
  • A copy of no more than three previous research publications (Master thesis for instance, contributions to a conference, papers).
  • Two letters (in English or French) of recommendation from professors acquainted with the applicant’s recent work.
  • Grades obtained during the two previous years (2008-2009 and 2009-2010).

If they already have a master degree, applicants should provide a certificate. Otherwise they should defend their master thesis before June 15 2011.

The application files must be received before May 1. 2011 and should be sent to Stéphanie Dubois by email (s.dubois@cso.cnrs.fr). An ad-hoc committee composed of Christine Musselin and Jérôme Aust will select then rank these applications and their ranking will be presented at the unit CSO council for approval. The applicant with the highest ranking will then be required to apply for the Sciences Graduate School (deadline: May 31). A definitive answer will be sent after approval by the executive board of the Sciences Po graduate school in June.
